How Garbage Disposals Work (And Why They Fail)

A garbage disposal uses a spinning plate with impellers (not blades) to fling food waste against a stationary grind ring, breaking it into tiny particles that wash down the drain. The motor, impellers, and grind ring are the three key components, and problems typically involve one of them.

Garbage disposals are built to handle small amounts of soft food waste. When they fail, it is usually because something went in that should not have, the motor has worn out, or a connection has started leaking. Here is how to diagnose and handle the most common problems.

Disposal Hums But Will Not Spin

This is the most common garbage disposal problem. If you hear the motor humming when you flip the switch, the motor is getting power but the grinding plate is stuck. Something is jammed between the impellers and the grind ring.

What you can try:

  • Turn off the disposal and disconnect the power: Never put your hand into a disposal. Switch it off at the wall switch and unplug it from the outlet under the sink (or turn off the circuit breaker).
  • Use an Allen wrench on the bottom: Most disposals have a hex socket on the bottom. Insert a 1/4-inch Allen wrench and work it back and forth to free the grinding plate. This is the approach the manufacturer recommends and works most of the time.
  • Use tongs or pliers to remove the obstruction: Shine a flashlight into the disposal and use long-handled tongs to remove whatever is jammed. Common culprits include bones, fruit pits, broken glass, and silverware.
  • Press the reset button: After clearing the jam, press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit before turning it back on. If the motor overheated due to the jam, it may have tripped the internal breaker.

Disposal Will Not Turn On at All

If you flip the switch and hear nothing (no hum, no sound at all), the issue is electrical or the motor has completely failed.

  • Check the reset button: Press the red button on the bottom of the disposal firmly. If it clicks, the internal circuit breaker was tripped. Try turning it on again.
  • Check the wall switch: If the disposal is wired to a wall switch, make sure the switch is functioning. Try plugging a small appliance into the outlet under the sink to verify it has power.
  • Check the circuit breaker: Look at your electrical panel for a tripped breaker. Reset it if needed.
  • Motor failure: If the unit has power but still does not respond at all, the motor has likely burned out. This is not repairable and means the disposal needs to be replaced.

Disposal Is Leaking

Water under the sink when the disposal runs (or even when it is off) indicates a leak. The location of the leak tells you what needs to be fixed.

  • Leak from the top (sink flange): The mounting ring that connects the disposal to the sink has loosened or the plumber's putty has failed. Tightening the mounting bolts or re-seating the flange with fresh putty usually fixes this.
  • Leak from the side (dishwasher connection): The hose clamp connecting the dishwasher drain hose to the disposal may be loose. Tightening it with a screwdriver often resolves the issue.
  • Leak from the side (discharge pipe): The connection between the disposal and the drain pipe may have a loose fitting or worn gasket. Tightening the slip nut or replacing the gasket is a straightforward fix.
  • Leak from the bottom: This usually means an internal seal has failed. A disposal leaking from the bottom cannot be repaired and needs to be replaced.

When to Repair vs. Replace Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals typically last 8 to 12 years. Knowing when to repair versus replace saves you money and frustration.

A repair makes sense when the disposal is less than 5 years old, the issue is a jam or a simple leak at a connection point, and the motor runs strong. A replacement is the better choice when the motor has failed, the unit leaks from the bottom (internal seal failure), it jams frequently despite proper use, it no longer grinds food effectively, or it is over 10 years old and developing problems.

When replacing, consider upgrading to a unit with higher horsepower if you have a large family or use the disposal heavily. A 3/4 HP or 1 HP model handles more food waste and jams less frequently than the 1/3 HP models found in many older homes.

What You Should Never Put Down a Garbage Disposal

Preventing problems is easier than fixing them. These items cause most disposal jams and drain clogs:

  • Grease, oil, and fat: They solidify in your drain pipes and cause clogs. Wipe grease into the trash instead.
  • Fibrous vegetables: Celery, asparagus, corn husks, and artichokes wrap around the impellers and cause jams.
  • Starchy foods: Pasta, rice, and potato peels expand with water and create a paste that clogs drains.
  • Bones and fruit pits: Small chicken bones are okay in small quantities, but beef bones, pork bones, and fruit pits can jam or damage the disposal.
  • Coffee grounds: They seem harmless but accumulate in drain pipes and contribute to clogs over time.
  • Non-food items: This sounds obvious, but we see broken glass, twist ties, rubber bands, and even silverware in disposals regularly.

What to Expect When You Call Us

We diagnose the problem on-site and give you an upfront quote for either repair or replacement before starting any work. If your disposal needs replacement, we carry the most popular models on our trucks and can usually install a new one the same day.

We handle everything: disconnecting the old unit, mounting the new one, connecting the plumbing and electrical, and testing. Most installations take about an hour. Call us or fill out our contact form to schedule your visit.

Common Questions

A quality garbage disposal lasts 8 to 12 years with proper use. Higher-end models with stainless steel components and more powerful motors tend to last longer.

Never put your hand in a garbage disposal, even when it is turned off. Use an Allen wrench from the bottom, tongs, or pliers to clear jams. Always disconnect the power before attempting any troubleshooting.

Yes, especially if you overload it or put items down it that should go in the trash (grease, starchy foods, fibrous vegetables). Run cold water for 15-20 seconds after turning off the disposal to flush debris through the pipes.

For most households, a 1/2 HP disposal is adequate. Families of 4+ or heavy cooks should consider 3/4 HP or 1 HP. A larger motor jams less and grinds food more effectively.

Yes. We install new garbage disposals in sinks that have never had one. This requires modifying the drain connection and adding a switched electrical outlet under the sink. We handle all of this.

Run cold water and grind ice cubes with a few lemon or orange peels. The ice cleans the grinding components and the citrus deodorizes. For deeper cleaning, pour baking soda into the disposal, let it sit for 10 minutes, then flush with vinegar and cold water.
